Review:
Art and Sound Style: Kingdom of Pixels art style can be surmised simply from the title of the game itself. While the game is using a pixel art style, it is in no way simplistic. Kingdom of Pixels provides a fair amount of detail and is visually appealing and in-depth.
The game also boasts a great sound design and musical composition. The music and sounds fit very well with the overall aesthetic and gameplay as well as being intuitive to what is going on in the game.
Length and Replay-ability (and potential length): Kingdom of Pixels offers three different game modes: ranked 2v2, unranked 1v1 and 2v2s, and bot practice. Being a MOBA allows for a vast, if not an unlimited amount of replayability due to the character and item pools as well as the multiplayer aspect. Each game lasts around 5 - 15 minutes and can go longer based on the competition.
The limiting factor for Kingdoms of Pixel is the average player count: it is very low so getting into a game can be difficult. One solution to this is the discord integration system where players can chat and queue up for games together. This isn't a perfect solution but the community can only hope that more people are introduced to the game and that the player base can grow over time.
Difficulty: Difficulty in MOBA games is always subject to change based on the players that are competing but there is also the fact of how easy the game is to learn and the ease of controls.
Kingdom of Pixels is overall pretty friendly for new players and provides a quick but intuitive tutorial for those just getting into the game. The controls are also very easy to pick up and play with little difficulty. The difficulty of the game like all MOBAs is learning how to use a character and their abilities as well as item building and taking advantage of the map.
Overall Gameplay and Final Score: Kingdom of Pixels is a fun and accessible MOBA that is friendly to new players and allows for a quick and low-stress experience for those looking to get into the genre.
MOBAs are daunting to get into, especially the heavy hitters in the genre like League of Legends and DOTA 2, but Kingdom of Pixels creates a fresh and smaller-scale environment. The main setback that befalls the game is the lack of a player base. This is something very difficult to control but hopefully, the game can get the love it deserves, allowing players to queue up and enjoy some action-packed gameplay alongside great sound and visuals.
For those looking to try out the MOBA genre, Kingdom of Pixels is a great and unintimidating starting point.
